Session 6. Clueless – Teaching Activities For Sexuality & HIV/AIDS

Hear what the State of Missouri requires to be taught about sexuality and HIV/AIDS, then learn a variety of activities you can take into the classroom Monday morning to be more comfortable presenting sexuality information and engaging students in their own learning.


Session 7. Having a BALL in the Classroom
Lynn Hagen, middle school teacher with the Columbia Public School District

Learn the benefits, whys and how-to’s of using exercise balls in the classroom as an aid to learning, especially for the kinesthetic learners. Additional ways to keep the students engaged will also be introduced based on successes and the science behind cognitive learning.


Session 8. Key Steps – Achieving Asthma Control
Ben Francisco, RN, PhD, Research Assistant Professor of Child Health, School of Medicine, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO and John Kraemer, PhD, Professor & Director, Environmental Analysis Center, Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, MO

Four key strategies will be presented for reducing asthma impairment among students – (1) FEV1 to assess airflow, (2) coaching to improve inhalation technique and medication effectiveness, (3) increased use of ICS and (4) trigger reduction, that can be used at home and at school.


Session 9. Kindergarten Farm Food Initiative and Eating from the Garden
Annette Triplett, MS, University of Missouri Extension, Columbia, MO; and Karen Elliott, MS, University of Missouri Extension, Kansas City, MO

Learn how two pilot programs are connecting elementary school students to where and how their food grows. Fruit and vegetable snacks, trips to the farm, and planting and harvesting vegetables from a school garden bring taste experiences together with classroom lessons.


Session 10. School-site Health Promotion Programs For Faculty And Staff
Carol Cox, PhD, CHES, Professor, Health Science, Truman State University, Kirksville, MO; and Meredith Pettitt, BS, Health and Physical Education, Moberly Middle School, Moberly, MO

Your school district can benefit in many ways from a well-designed school site health promotion program. Participants will receive support materials, resources, and advice on steps to create and implement a school-site health promotion program.


Session 11. New Vision Screening Requirements And Guidelines in Missouri
Marjorie Cole, RN, MSN, State School Nurse Consultant, Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services; Deb Cook, RN, Nurse Coordinator, Kennett Public School District and Diane Herndon, RN

Hands-on practice of the new tools and protocols from the manual and guidelines for vision screening, developed by the Department of Health and Senior Services in collaboration with the Children’s Vision Commission. This session will also cover referral recommendations and program evaluation.
